UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES LOS BAÑOS

The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), a coeducational publicly funded academic, research and extension institution, is one of the eight constituent universities of the University of the Philippines System.

The university provides leadership to higher education institutions in its traditional strongholds of agriculture and forestry, as well as in the areas of biotechnology, natural resource management, engineering, food science, computer science and information technology, environmental science, and nanotechnology.

HISTORY

The College of Human Ecology is one of the eleven degree-granting units of the University of the Philippines at Los Baños.

 

The College started as an institute on November 28, 1974. It became a full fledged college in 1983 and since then has continued to advocate for a holistic and integrative understanding of human-environment interactions and to conduct activities that focus on the fulfillment of basic human needs, resource planning utilization and management, and delivery of social services at the family and community levels. The College develops programs for research, training and community service towards a desirable quality of life for everyone.

 

It is one of only a few institutions in Asia that offers a degree program in Human Ecology and is the first and only one to offer the degree in the Philippines. It is also the first in Asia to offer a degree program in Food and Nutrition Planning.

DEGREE PROGRAMS

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN HUMAN ECOLOGY

The program aims to produce key professionals who can contribute to the improvement of human welfare. Specifically, the student is trained to understand human development in relation to the biophysical and social environment; to have the necessary skills and competencies to participate in development programs as well as teaching and research on human-environment interaction; and to internalize and apply the ecological perspective to society’s problems.

 

3 MAJORS

1. Major in Social Technology

Focuses on the various social development services and is concerned with the tools and techniques of effecting self-propelling communities and sustainable development.

​

2. Major in Human Settlements and Planning

Focuses on design and implementation of plans which will ensure the long-term sustainability of community and environmental resources while providing optimum development benefits to rural and urban communities. 

​

3. Major in Family Development

Focuses on the development of the individuals and families as they transact, relate, and adapt to the environment.
